From From the Trees to the Stars

The Earth is the ultimate Goldilocks Planet. Not too hot or too cold; not too big or too small; not too old or too young. It's just right.

Assuming there is no Judgement Day coming, then we must not only do whatever we can to preserve the habitability of this planet, but also to seek out others like it.

The search is underway to locate and catalog all Earth-like planets within range of our detection technology - and there are dozens of candidates.

But the nearest that might be habitable is 12 light-years away.

And in the meantime, short-sighted planning and policy-making make it hard to be optimistic that our descendants will still have a livable home planet in 1,000 years.
