Technology

From From the Trees to the Stars

Tool use is not unique to human beings, but for millions of years now we've been using tools to make other tools to make more sophisticated tools to the point where we are now making tools capable of replacing themselves and we're on the verge of creating tools capable of replacing ourselves.

In the same way that our biological evolution is made possible by the building blocks of organic chemistry, described using DNA, so our technological evolution is made possible by the building blocks of human ideas, described using language.

While technology is also developed for altruistic and artistic purposes, the driving forces of technological progress are largely competitive and are ranked here in order from

  1. Survival - technologies developed to satisfy our most basic needs for food, clothing, shelter and security
  2. Comfort - technologies developed to improve our quality of life
  3. Efficiency
  4. Indulgence - technologies that serve only to indulge our desires
